Methodology & data standards

Policy data is only useful if it is right

This is the standard every ClearRules tool is held to — written down so readers, journalists and reviewers can hold us to it too.

Primary sources only

Every figure, threshold and date we publish traces to a primary source: the statute text, the Federal Register, IRS revenue procedures, HHS/ASPE poverty guidelines, CMS rules, or a state agency's official documentation.

Secondary sources (news coverage, think-tank summaries) are used to find primary sources — never as the basis for a number.

Per-field verification status

Our datasets are stored as structured records, and every field carries its own source URL and verification state. A page never mixes a verified field with an unverified one without saying so.

When a rule exists on paper but a state agency has not published implementation details yet, we label the field 'announced, not yet implemented' rather than guessing.

Last-verified dates, visible to readers

Every tool and dataset page displays the date its data was last re-verified against the source. Policy changes silently; our pages should never silently go stale.

If you see a date older than the rule change you are reading about, treat the page with suspicion — and tell us.

A standing rule-change radar

We monitor the sources that move our topics: Congress, the IRS, CMS, USCIS, the Department of Labor, and state Medicaid agencies.

When a rule changes, the pipeline is: confirm against the primary source → update the structured dataset → regenerate the affected tools → update the last-verified date. We target 48 hours from verified change to updated tool.

Show the math

Calculators disclose the exact tables and formulas behind every result — for example the IRS applicable-percentage table and Federal Poverty Level guidelines behind our ACA subsidy estimates.

If your result looks wrong, you can audit the inputs and the formula yourself, and we link both next to the answer.

Corrections

We correct factual errors promptly and note substantive corrections on the page. Report one to hello@clearruleslabs.com — a link to the primary source gets the fastest fix.

We do not fabricate reviewer credentials. Where professional review is pending, pages say so.

Found something wrong? Good — tell us.

A correction with a link to the primary source is the most useful email we get. Every fix makes the next reader’s answer right.
